Puerto Vallarta celebrated a sweet milestone on January 6, 2025, by preparing and serving the largest Rosca de Reyes ever created in the city’s history. Spanning over one kilometer in length, the massive King’s Cake was cut and distributed among locals and tourists during a festive event on the iconic boardwalk.
The event, led by municipal president Luis Munguía, drew hundreds of attendees who eagerly gathered to witness the spectacle. The cake, displayed on a series of plastic tables draped in white tablecloths, stretched from the Hotel Rosita to the famous arches, creating a memorable sight for all present.
The Rosca de Reyes, or King’s Cake, is more than just a delicious treat. Every year on January 6, families across Mexico and beyond come together to enjoy this iconic sweet bread, steeped in rich cultural and religious significance.
The tradition dates back to Europe, particularly in Spain and France, where the cake became part of Epiphany celebrations, commemorating the visit of the Three Wise Men to baby Jesus. The oval shape of the rosca symbolizes God’s infinite love, while the candied fruits adorning it represent the jewels of the Wise Men. Hidden inside the bread is a small figurine of baby Jesus, recalling the biblical story of Mary and Joseph protecting Him from Herod.
Whoever finds the figurine is entrusted with hosting a celebration on February 2, known as Candlemas Day, continuing this cherished tradition.
This year’s record-breaking rosca in Puerto Vallarta highlighted the power of community and the joy of shared traditions. Beyond its religious origins, the Rosca de Reyes has become a symbol of togetherness, bringing families and neighbors together for a moment of celebration and connection.
