The sinkhole that affected the Mascota-Puerto Vallarta Highway 544 will be repaired on Monday, August 23, with a new drainage system.
The highway is expected to reopen on Tuesday. In the meantime, all personal vehicles are being detoured to alternate routes.
This sinkhole arose because the drainage system was insufficient to contain the rain runoff that has been increasing due to climate change. It will be completely replaced to add reinforcement, and to increase its hydraulic capacity by installing two 1.2-meter-diameter pipes.
Fortunately, the highway did not collapse, thanks to the fact that the drains were clean and unclogged, which allowed the water to run under the highway.
The work to be carried out on the 10-meter section of the 544 consist of laying the pipes, compacting the land until it reaches the subgrade, then adding the base and the asphalt.
