Travel between Puerto Vallarta and Bahía de Banderas has become increasingly difficult as a National Guard checkpoint set up before the Ameca Bridge is causing major traffic congestion. Combined with ongoing construction at the Las Juntas interchange, the result is long delays and no viable detours.

What used to be a short 15-minute drive from the airport to the bridge can now take anywhere from 40 minutes to an hour, particularly during peak traffic hours. The bottleneck affects not only commuters and local residents but also tourists and public transportation.

Drivers report crawling traffic, long lines, and no way around the chaos. The lack of alternative routes between the two municipalities only adds to the frustration.

So far, authorities have not provided any details on how long the federal checkpoint will remain in place. In the meantime, travelers are advised to plan ahead, leave with extra time, and prepare for delays.

This situation is especially burdensome for those who regularly cross between states for work, errands, or appointments. And with limited public transport options, the cost and inconvenience are even greater for those without a private vehicle.

Until further notice, patience and early departures are the best strategy for navigating the growing congestion.
