Holy Week brought tragedy to Puerto Vallarta, with three separate drowning incidents reported during the first days of the holiday period. According to Misael López Muro, director of Civil Protection, the fatalities occurred in a beach, a river, and a hotel pool.
Each case unfolded under different circumstances. One victim was pulled out to sea by strong currents, another was swept away by a sudden rise in river flow, and the third drowned in a hotel pool, reportedly due to lack of supervision.
In addition to the drownings, authorities responded to several road accidents during the busy holiday week, including two vehicle rollovers. Fortunately, no serious injuries or hospitalizations were reported from those incidents, according to the Civil Protection and Fire Department.
Emergency services were on high alert throughout Holy Week, maintaining a strong presence at beaches, roads, and tourist areas. Despite these efforts, the large influx of visitors and increased activity presented significant challenges.
Holy Week is one of the busiest times of year in Puerto Vallarta, drawing thousands of tourists and increasing the risk of accidents, especially in water-related environments. Officials continue to urge both locals and visitors to follow safety guidelines, pay attention to posted warnings, and avoid entering water in unsafe conditions.
