The winter holiday season has begun, and Jalisco’s roads have already claimed a victim—a woman who died after her vehicle overturned at kilometer 45 on the Guadalajara-Tepic highway, one of the state’s most dangerous roads.
According to the “Statistical Yearbook of Collisions on Federal Highways, 2023” by the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications, and Transportation (SICT), Jalisco’s highways are high-risk zones for drivers, with the Guadalajara-Tepic highway alone seeing 27 accidents in 2023. The most perilous sections include stretches from the Periférico to the El Arenal toll booth, the Plan de Barrancas section, and the Nayarit border.
The toll road to Altos de Jalisco recorded the highest number of accidents with 83 incidents, resulting in 20 fatalities and 84 injuries. Hazardous sections include Guadalajara-Zapotlanejo, Jalostotitlán-San Juan de los Lagos, and Acatic-Tepatitlán. The free road to Altos had 38 accidents, leaving 7 dead and 46 injured.
Most accidents are caused by drivers leaving the road, rear-end collisions, side impacts, and head-on crashes, with light vehicles being involved most frequently.
To reduce fatalities, the Jalisco government has deployed over 5,000 officers from various agencies to monitor state roads and assist travelers. The State Highway Police will patrol main roads to provide support to tourists and drivers.
