Puerto Vallarta’s malecón renovation project is set to resume as part of a comprehensive Historic Center rescue plan, according to city manager Juan Pablo Martínez Torres. The project, which stalled under the previous administration due to unfulfilled contractual obligations, will begin with lighting improvements and repair of damaged walkway sections.
Following discussions with the Advisory Council, led by Jorge Villanueva Hernández, the city has committed to completing the first phase before Easter tourism season. This includes installing 34 new lights along the stretch from the lighthouse to 31 de Octubre Street, along with replacing damaged slabs to enhance safety and aesthetics.
The revitalization extends beyond the boardwalk, with plans to launch a building facade renovation and cleaning campaign in central streets next week. Enhanced lighting features prominently in the strategy to improve security perceptions for both residents and visitors.
The comprehensive Historic Center strategy includes updating the district’s Management Plan and reactivating the Citizen Council. Officials will implement an urban monitoring system to assess impacts and identify areas needing intervention. Martínez Torres acknowledged the district’s challenges while emphasizing the city’s commitment to systematic improvements.
Key business leaders participated in the Advisory Council meeting, including Ramiro Sierra, Guadalupe Bayardi González, Evangelina Sánchez Dueñas, and María Elena Avelar Mondragón, alongside Councilor Arnulfo Ortega Contreras. Smart Government manager Ángel Marcial Carrillo presented the city’s strategic urban management approach.
