A comprehensive new Civil Hospital planned for the Centro Universitario de la Costa (CUCosta) facilities aims to eliminate the need for patient transfers to Guadalajara by offering expanded emergency services, specialties, and subspecialties. The project represents a collaborative effort between the University of Guadalajara, state and municipal governments, and regional public health institutions.

Dr. Juan Torres Velázquez, head of CUC’s Department of Medical Sciences, presented the Comprehensive Health Development Plan for the Western Coast and Sierra Region to Puerto Vallarta’s City Council Health Commission. The project’s advisory group consists of CUC professors with extensive public health management experience, who are working to coordinate healthcare efforts across municipal, state, and federal levels.

The new facility will serve as a teaching hospital with two primary objectives:
– Expanding specialty and subspecialty services beyond those currently available at the Regional Hospital
– Developing infrastructure capable of handling complex medical cases locally

This development would eliminate costly transfers to other municipalities, benefiting both healthcare institutions and patients’ families. As a teaching hospital, it will also help retain medical professionals in Puerto Vallarta by providing specialized training opportunities.

Additional Healthcare Infrastructure Plans:
– Converting the existing Puerto Vallarta Regional Hospital into a specialized maternal and child care facility
– Establishing new emergency medical centers in strategic locations:
– South Medical Unit near Boca de Tomatlán
– North Medical Unit in Las Palmas
– Central Medical Unit at the La Lija sports complex
– Creating health centers and emergency care units (Green Cross) to serve communities with limited healthcare access

The expanded healthcare network will serve not only the Costa Sierra-Occidental region but also the southern region of Nayarit state, addressing the growing healthcare demands that have intensified since the 2021 pandemic.
