Mexico will not ask for proof of immunization against Covid-19 from US citizens entering the country starting in November, sources from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) have said.

This is not something decided by the SRE, but by the Ministry of Health, said the source.

The United States announced that travel restrictions on the border with Mexico will be eliminated, as long as travelers have completed their vaccinations against Covid-19. However, it will only allow entry to people immunized with vaccines approved by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Individuals who have received the Moderna, Pfizer, Janssen/Johnson & Johnson, Oxford/AstraZeneca, Sinopharm, and Sinovac doses will be allowed to travel to the US. However, at least two weeks must pass from the application of the vaccine to be able to travel. People vaccinated with Sputnik V or with CanSino will not be allowed to enter the country because they are not endorsed by the WHO.

“We are going to ask the WHO to finish giving the certificates to pharmaceutical companies around the world that have delivered vaccines that have demonstrated their effectiveness and that have not generated any health problems,” said President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) in his morning lecture yesterday.

Of the 260 million vaccines that have reached Mexico, 60 million are Sputnik V and CanSino. CanSino was used to immunize 2.7 million teachers.

After the announcement, the coordinator of the National Council of Legislators and Migrant Leaders (Conaly), José Carmona, indicated that Mexico is not in a position to require certificates of vaccination against Covid-19.

“They are not going to do it. Mexico does not play at parity with the United States due to many disadvantages. In fact, Mexico would like them to come,” he said.

He pointed out that, when opening the borders, there is a risk of contagion, so it is necessary to take preventive measures.

“It must be remembered that when these types of borders are opened, and the lives of citizens on both sides are normalized, an outbreak can occur, and there would be infections,” he explained.

“We strongly agree that sanitary filters be used to take temperatures, see in what condition they arrive,” he said.
