The government of Mexico, through the Ministry of Foreign Relations (SRE), demanded that Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau withdraw as soon as possible the measure imposed this Friday to suspend flights to Mexico, in order to prevent a deep economic crisis in the North American region.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced in a statement the details of the new policy promoted by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, which will be in force until Friday, April 30 in order to avoid an increase in the number of COVID- 19 infections.

The ministry is confident that the measure “can be withdrawn as soon as possible in order to prevent a crisis.”

The action was put into effect after the Canadian government reached an agreement with four Canadian airlines prohibiting travel to “sun and beach” tourist destinations.

Likewise, the only airports that will receive international flights will be Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, and Montreal.

On a date yet to be confirmed, passengers arriving in Canada will have to undergo a Covid-19 test at the airport, and wait for the results in one of the hotels selected by the government.

The expenses for 72 hours of stay, indicates the statement, must be covered by each traveler, with a rate of up to 2,000 Canadian dollars, about 32,000 pesos.

If the test is positive, he said, “they must remain in a shelter for 14 days in a government facility.”

The violation of any requirement, Trudeau warned, is judged as a crime, and the penalties are up to six months in prison and/or a fine of 750,000 Canadian dollars (1, 208 pesos).

Currently, to travel to Canada, it is necessary to present a negative PCR COVID-19 test result before boarding the flight. The PCR test must be performed within 72 hours prior to scheduled departure to Canada.

The Government of Canada warned that it continues to intensify surveillance efforts to ensure that travelers comply with the mandatory quarantine period.

All travelers will need to use the ArriveCAN tool:  https://www.canada.ca/en/public-health/services/diseases/coronavirus-disease-covid-19/arrivecan.html
