As most of us know, Coca-Cola is an internationally recognized drink, which for some people can be a perfect accompaniment to tacos, garnachas, or any dish of food due to its flavor and refreshing effect.

However, Coca-Cola contains a lot of sugar, which is why this and other products receive criticisms because continuous consumption of soda can affect people’s health.

Due to the above, labelling of products containing a high level of sugar is now obligatory.

According to the National Council of Humanities, Sciences and Technologies (Conahcyt), the State of Chiapas is the region in the world where Coca-Cola is consumed the most. It is estimated that each inhabitant of Chiapas drinks 821.25 liters of soft drink per year (over 1/2 gallon per day), while 160 liters is the per capita consumption throughout the country (1/11th of a gallon per day), reported a study by the Center for Multidisciplinary Research on Chiapas and the Southern Border (Cimsur).

The above is the primary reason for the high incidence of diabetes in the region, which, in the last decade, has been the main cause of death.

Among the reasons why the consumption of sugary drinks has increased in the southeastern region are lax legislation toward soft drink companies, marketing campaigns in local languages, and the poor accessibility of quality drinking water in sufficient quantity for the inhabitants.

This information comes from research carried out by Jaime Page Pliego, doctor in Anthropology from the Center for Multidisciplinary Research on Chiapas and the Southern Border (Cimsur), which reveals that this increase was also caused by a modification of social and religious life of its inhabitants.
