To support international recognition of Mexican driver’s licenses, the Jalisco state government—through the Ministry of Transportation (SETRAN)—has introduced a new bilingual license. This updated version includes English translations of key information such as blood type, emergency contacts, driving restrictions, and vehicle authorization type, making it easier for foreign authorities to interpret.
While maintaining the institutional design introduced in December 2024, the new license incorporates advanced security elements to prevent forgery. These include a color-shifting hologram, a QR code for authenticity checks, microprinting, and a unique serial number.
Further security enhancements consist of intricate patterns, UV-sensitive or invisible inks, and optically variable indicators (OVIs) that change color depending on the viewing angle. The license also features a digitally printed photograph that resists tampering without damage.
SETRAN assures drivers that current licenses remain valid and encourages them to monitor their expiration dates. Renewals can be processed at any of the 31 service centers throughout Jalisco—14 in the Guadalajara Metropolitan Area and 17 in municipalities across the state.
Additionally, the “Licencia Digital Jalisco” mobile app allows users to download a digital version of their license. Since the app’s launch under the new administration, it has been downloaded over 82,000 times. The digital license mirrors the physical version in validity and expiration and serves as a secure, electronic copy at no additional cost. However, it does not replace the physical card.
