Joining the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) without being employed is a viable option for those seeking health services access without social security enrollment. Through the Family Health Insurance program, beneficiaries receive medical consultations, surgical care, and medications by paying an annual fee. This plan serves Mexicans not contributing to any social security system, whether living in Mexico or abroad, and allows inclusion of direct relatives such as spouses, children, parents, or siblings. In exceptional cases, IMSS authorizes individual enrollment for those who can prove they have no direct relatives.
As of March 1, 2025, IMSS has updated the Family Health Insurance rates based on age:
- 0 to 19 years: $8,900
- 20 to 29 years: $11,100
- 30 to 39 years: $11,850
- 40 to 49 years: $13,800
- 50 to 59 years: $14,250
- 60 to 69 years: $19,800
- 70 to 79 years: $20,650
- 80 years and older: $21,300
To enroll, applicants must not be registered in another Mexican social security system and must present documentation including official identification, birth certificate, CURP, proof of address and, if applicable, a marriage certificate. A medical questionnaire must also be completed to assess the applicant’s health status.
The enrollment process can be completed in person at the corresponding IMSS Subdelegation or online through the Institute’s digital platform. For in-person applications, interested parties should visit the Affiliation-Validity of Rights area from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. with the required documentation. The online option requires a CURP, Social Security Number, and an active email account.
