Various feminist groups and collectives from Puerto Vallarta joined together in a peaceful march to commemorate International Women’s Day on Saturday afternoon, March 8. Tribuna de la Bahía confirmed that the event proceeded smoothly without damage to public monuments. However, by Sunday morning, the boardwalk appeared defaced with scratches, graffiti, and phrases such as “Vallarta is political and pacifist.”
The contingent departed from Women’s Park, located at the intersection of Francisco Medina Ascencio Boulevard and Luis Donaldo Colosio Avenue, proceeding in an orderly fashion to the Malecón Arches. There, participants held a rally remembering victims of femicide and other gender violence.
The demonstration remained peaceful throughout and concluded around 8:00 pm without incident, as this media outlet verified throughout the feminist activity.
However, by Sunday morning, March 9, social media began circulating images showing the emblematic Malecón Arches covered with graffiti, messages directed at politicians, and slogans about feminism in Mexico.
The arches had been free from graffiti and visible damage at the conclusion of the march, indicating the vandalism occurred during the early morning hours of Sunday.
