A foreign resident was hospitalized and an alleged attacker arrested following a violent home invasion on Calle Lirios in the 5 de Diciembre neighborhood, authorities confirmed Friday.
According to preliminary police reports, the victim’s wife called emergency services after finding an unknown man assaulting her husband inside their home at approximately 590 Lirios Street. Municipal police arrived quickly and apprehended the suspect, who slipped on a stairway while trying to escape. Paramedics treated him at the scene before he was transferred to the Jalisco State Prosecutor’s Office for booking.
The injured resident, whose identity and nationality have not been disclosed, was transported to a local hospital. Officials described his condition as “stable but under observation.” Authorities are withholding the suspect’s identity pending legal proceedings.
The two-story home is located in 5 de Diciembre, a densely populated residential area just north of Puerto Vallarta’s historic center. Popular with both expats and locals, parts of the neighborhood have faced security concerns due to poor street lighting and limited nighttime police patrols.
While Puerto Vallarta’s overall crime rate remains lower than many other coastal resort cities—official figures place its crime index at 38 out of 100, compared to 58 in Miami—incidents like burglaries and assaults do occur, particularly in rapidly redeveloping zones.
State investigators are interviewing witnesses and collecting forensic evidence. Authorities are also reviewing security footage from neighboring properties to determine whether the suspect knew the victims or chose the home at random.
Neighbors expressed shock over the attack. “This is usually a quiet street, home to families, retirees, and working people,” said one resident, who requested anonymity. “We’ve been asking the city for better lighting and more police presence, especially after a series of break-ins last year.”
In response, municipal officials have assigned extra patrols to the area and urged residents to report any suspicious activity via Mexico’s emergency number, 911.
