The arrival of Holy Week, from Sunday, March 28th through Saturday, April 3rd, represents the risk of a third wave or a rebound in Covid-19 cases for Mexico, particularly in the metropolises, if measures such as the use of face masks, hand washing, and avoiding concentrated or closed places are going to be ignored, specialists agreed.
Although the authorities in beach areas have established limits, and religious processions are prohibited, if the population does not follow the measures, there will be an upturn in infections.
“The call is not to go on vacation,” said Francisco Oliva Sánchez, researcher at the Department of Health Care, Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana (UAM).
He explained that it is the tourist service providers and the leaders of the Catholic Church who must establish clear measures in order to avoid the rebound of infections of the coronavirus.
On Wednesday, the deputy director of the World Health Organization, Jarbas Barbosa pointed out that there is “the possibility of a third wave” of Covid infections in our country because the virus is still in circulation.
UAM researcher Francisco Oliva explained that “it is more than a wave. It is a rebound, because in reality, what is seen in the graph are peak moments. The peak that began in January was due to December holidays, and is actually because the vast majority of the population, for some reason, forgets the basic measures of healthy distance, the use of face masks, and alcohol gel. Although the government asks people not to have massive meetings, people do it anyway.”
