Tropical Storm Ivo is moving closer to the coast of Jalisco, bringing the potential for intense rainfall, strong winds, and high waves along Mexico’s western and southern shores, according to the National Meteorological Service (SMN).

The storm will make its nearest approach to Jalisco this Thursday, passing about 175 km west of Playa Pérula. As of this morning, Ivo was located 115 km west-southwest of Punta San Telmo, Michoacán, and 805 km southeast of Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur. It is moving west-northwest at 39 km/h, with maximum sustained winds of 75 km/h and gusts up to 95 km/h.

Forecasts call for:

  • Intense rainfall (75–150 mm) along Jalisco’s coast

  • Very heavy rainfall (50–75 mm) in Colima and Michoacán

  • Possible thunderstorms, river and stream overflows, landslides, and flooding in low-lying areas

  • Sustained winds of 30–40 km/h with gusts of 50–70 km/h along the coasts of Guerrero, Michoacán, Colima, and Jalisco

  • Waves of 3–4 meters on the coasts of Michoacán, Colima, and Jalisco, and 2–3 meters along Guerrero’s coastline

The SMN warns that Ivo could strengthen into a Category 1 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale by Friday, August 8, when it is forecast to be about 230 km south of Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur.

Authorities urge residents and maritime operators in the affected states to remain alert, follow Civil Protection instructions, and exercise extreme caution due to hazardous weather conditions.
