A formal complaint has been filed with the Federal Commission for the Protection Against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris) against Costco Puerto Vallarta, located at Avenida Fluvial Vallarta 134. The issue arose after a customer discovered mold on the bun of a hot dog purchased from the store’s soda fountain. The complaint, registered under folio 02/2025, was confirmed by a document obtained by CPS Noticias.
The customer, identified as Victor, initially shared the incident on social media, recounting that he noticed mold on the bread while eating the hot dog. The post quickly went viral, sparking outrage among users and prompting hundreds of comments criticizing the store’s hygiene practices.
Victor reported the issue to Costco staff, who offered him a refund of 35 pesos, the cost of the product. However, he expressed concerns about potential health risks, as he had already consumed part of the food.
Experts warn that consuming moldy bread can lead to symptoms such as stomach upset, nausea, or vomiting, particularly in sensitive individuals. Certain molds may also produce mycotoxins, which can be toxic if ingested in significant amounts.
The incident has drawn attention to food safety standards at the wholesale retailer’s Puerto Vallarta location.
