A new initiative aims to restore and maintain the traditional appearance of Puerto Vallarta’s historic center, which has faced rapid transformation due to real estate development and commercial growth. The “Let’s Paint Puerto Vallarta” campaign focuses on facade restoration and deep cleaning efforts to preserve the area’s distinctive character.

Juan Pablo Martínez, City and Historic Center manager, is calling on residents between 31 de Octubre Street and Basilio Badillo to participate in the restoration effort. The campaign asks property owners to maintain specific architectural elements according to local Urban Development Regulations:
– Traditional red roof tiles
– White paint covering 70% of facades
– Terracotta-colored dust covers

Martínez noted that recent development projects have often overlooked these regulations, with new condominium towers along streets like Ignacio L Vallarta, Insurgentes, and Basilio Badillo deviating from the traditional color scheme and architectural guidelines. This departure from historical standards has been permitted by previous municipal administrations.

The initiative has already begun with extensive cleaning of the boardwalk and central plaza areas, which serve thousands of daily visitors. Tourism surveys consistently identify downtown Puerto Vallarta and its boardwalk as the destination’s primary distinguishing features among Mexican beach resorts.

“Puerto Vallarta is more than a destination, it is our home,” Martínez emphasized. “It reflects our history, identity, and pride.” He urged all residents, tenants, and business owners in the historic center to join in preserving the port’s essential character through this restoration campaign.
