Although some residents of the Los Mangos neighborhood are calling for the relocation of a big gaze of raccoons there, there are strategies they can use to cause the raccoons to go elsewhere.

Biologist Roberto Ornelas said that there are some non-aggressive strategies people can
use to reduce the inconvenience caused by raccoons, animals that feed on everything within their reach.

He said, “The issue of Los Mangos is not an isolated event. There are many incidents that have to do with the proliferation of raccoons. They are adaptable to any environment, both natural and urban. Construction developments are displacing them, so they are on the lookout for new places to live and eat. They are nocturnal animals. They go out to look for food at night.”

The problem revolves around the search for food by raccoons, which is why he recommends not leaving food for pets outside the home or for stray dogs.

To avoid tearing garbage bags, it is necessary to use lidded containers and/or change the collection time of the garbage trucks, since residents take out their garbage at 8 pm.

Another point is not to leave water sources available for them.

He added, “Capture or relocation of the animals is possible, but to capture them takes a lot of time and money. Authorities would have to respond to residents’ calls one by one. The animals do not have to be poisoned. In fact, that may be subject to sanctions by Profepa or the municipality, in addition to risking ingestion by children and other animals and pets.”
