Tropical Storm Barbara has intensified into a Category 1 hurricane—the first of the 2025 Eastern Pacific hurricane season—while Tropical Storm Cosme continues to strengthen offshore.
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) reported early Monday that swells generated by Hurricane Barbara are expected to produce life-threatening surf and rip currents along Mexico’s southwestern coast in the coming days.
As of 6 a.m., Barbara was located approximately 186 miles (300 km) south-southwest of Playa Pérula, Jalisco, and just under 190 miles (305 km) southwest of Manzanillo, Colima. By 9 a.m., it had moved to within 150 miles (245 km) of Manzanillo, one of Mexico’s major ports.
According to Mexico’s National Meteorological Service (SMN), Barbara was moving northwest at 10 mph (17 km/h) with sustained winds of 68 mph (110 km/h) and gusts up to 87 mph (140 km/h).
Although no coastal warnings or watches were in effect Monday morning, forecasters warned that Barbara could bring strong winds and heavy rain to coastal areas of Guerrero, Michoacán, Colima, and Jalisco. The storm is not expected to make landfall.
The SMN stated that the heaviest rainfall is expected in Guerrero, Michoacán, and Colima, with potential impacts also extending to Nayarit, where waves could reach up to five meters. Parts of Oaxaca and Chiapas may also experience rain and wind linked to the system.
Authorities cautioned that total rainfall could exceed 101 millimeters, raising the risk of localized flooding in vulnerable areas.
Meanwhile, farther out in the Pacific, Tropical Storm Cosme showed signs of strengthening Monday morning. Located about 630 miles (1,015 km) south-southwest of the tip of the Baja California Peninsula, Cosme had maximum sustained winds near 65 mph (100 km/h) with higher gusts. Tropical-storm-force winds extended up to 60 miles (95 km) from its center.
The NHC predicted that Cosme would likely reach hurricane strength later Monday. The storm was moving west-northwest at 6 mph (9 km/h), with a gradual turn north expected later in the day. It is forecast to accelerate toward the north-northeast on Tuesday and Wednesday before rapidly weakening.
