Local authorities are warning residents about a new scam involving counterfeit cards falsely linked to a supposed government COVID-19 aid program.
According to a statement issued by the Ixtlahuacán de los Membrillos Public Security Directorate, scammers are distributing fake cards labeled as part of a non-existent “Well-being – COVID-19 Emergency Support” initiative. Victims are told they qualify for financial assistance but must deposit 300 pesos to activate the card—an amount the scammers then pocket.
“These cards are part of a fraudulent scheme and are not tied to any official support program,” said Eduardo Javier Mancilla Mejía, Director of Municipal Public Safety. “We urge the public not to deposit any money or share personal information in connection with these cards.”
The scam has reportedly appeared in multiple areas across Jalisco, not just Ixtlahuacán.
Officials are urging residents to remain cautious, avoid sharing personal or banking details, and report any suspicious activity to the proper authorities.
The statement emphasized that fraudsters are exploiting the appearance and language of legitimate social programs to deceive people. Citizens are reminded to verify any claims of government aid directly through official sources.
