President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) insulted the award given to the Minister President (Chief Justice) of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN), Norma Lucía Piña Hernández. It was granted by the International Association of Women Judges (IAW).

Piña will receive the Human Rights 2023 award during its biennial celebration, held in Morocco.

AMLO downplayed the recognition of the chief justice because, he hinted, the award is given indiscriminately. He compared the award to the false documents that are made in Santo Domingo, Mexico City.

He said, “Those prizes can be obtained in the Plaza de Santo Domingo,” which also mocked the IAW.

The award stems from Piña’s recognized career in defense of human rights with a gender perspective, as well as the rights of girls, boys, and adolescents, people with different
abilities, the LGBTQ+ community, as well as the free development of the individual’s personality, expression, education, and religion, among others.

Both the award and AMLO’s comments come within the atmosphere of AMLO’s disagreement regarding Piña’s invalidation on April 23 of the transfer of the National Guard to the Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena).

AMLO accused Piña of “politicking” and “indignity” after the ruling.
