The Puerto Vallarta City Council is stepping up enforcement to ensure that grocery stores licensed to sell bottled alcoholic beverages comply with regulated business hours, which run from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.

Carlos César Mejía Amezcua, Director of Inspection and Regulations, said that Article 70 of the Municipal Commerce Regulations will be strictly enforced. Grocery store owners have recently been reminded of these rules as part of an effort to maintain public order in residential areas.

Stores that continue selling alcohol after 10 p.m. risk being fined. However, they may apply for a special permit to extend their hours by up to two hours by visiting the Registration and Licensing Office.

“This measure only applies to grocery stores where alcohol sales are considered a secondary business activity,” Mejía Amezcua clarified. “Convenience stores, restaurants, bars, and other establishments have different types of licenses and are governed by separate regulations.”

The new enforcement push is a response to ongoing complaints from residents about late-night alcohol sales in neighborhood grocery stores. City inspectors, especially those working evening shifts, will be conducting regular spot checks.

Citizens who observe stores violating the regulations can report them by calling 322 224 0918 or 322-224-7805. Complaints will be formally documented, and residents will receive a tracking number to follow up on their case.

The city government emphasized that the goal is not only to uphold the law but to promote peace and order in Vallarta’s communities.
