Puerto Vallarta has launched a public consultation titled “My Malecón Reborn” to gather citizen input on the future of its iconic seaside promenade. From July 17 to August 4, residents and visitors can participate in shaping how the Malecón will be renovated, including whether it should be reopened to vehicles.

As previously announced by Mayor Luis Ernesto Munguía González, this initiative marks the start of a broader rehabilitation and expansion plan for the downtown area as part of Vision 2030 and the Historic Center Management Plan.

Participants can share their opinions through an online form at www.puertovallarta.gob.mx/mi-malecon-renace, at survey booths along the Malecón, or during outreach events in local neighborhoods. Topics include lighting, safety, green areas, public art, commerce, and pedestrian infrastructure—all aimed at developing a proposal that truly reflects the needs and desires of Vallarta’s community.

Key Survey Topics

The 24-question survey focuses heavily on one of the most debated issues: whether to allow vehicle access on the Malecón.

Participants are asked:

  • Do you support revitalizing the Malecón?

  • Which elements should be prioritized?
(e.g. green spaces, lighting, public safety, cultural activities, accessibility, and commerce)

  • Are current amenities (benches, trash bins, ramps, lighting, signage) adequate?

  • Should street vending be better regulated?

  • How important is it to enhance cultural elements like sculptures or live performances?

  • How safe do you feel walking the Malecón?

The most anticipated question appears as number 17:
Would you agree to allow vehicle access to the Malecón on specific days and times?

Follow-up questions explore:

  • Whether vehicle access would improve or worsen the visitor experience

  • Preferred days, times, and durations for potential vehicle access

  • Opinions on traffic control measures such as speed limits, signage, and police presence

  • Whether access from intersecting streets should be permitted

Question 24 invites open suggestions from participants.

Community-Driven Renewal

Puerto Vallarta’s downtown isn’t just a historic area—it’s home to one of the city’s most cherished public spaces. With this consultation, the city is inviting residents to take part in its transformation.

Municipal leaders emphasized the value of citizen participation during the launch:

  • Ángel Marcial, Smart Government Manager: “Real change happens when people’s voices guide decisions.”

  • Leonardo Gutiérrez, Director of Social Participation: “The new Malecón should reflect the community’s vision.”

  • Laurel Carrillo, Councilor: “The Malecón holds our past, but it also fuels our future.”

  • Juan Pablo Martínez, Historic Center Manager: “It’s a living postcard of our identity.”

Through “My Malecón Reborn,” the city aims to create a vibrant, inclusive, and functional public space—one shaped by the very people who use and love it.
