Two aides to Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada were killed in a targeted shooting Tuesday morning in the Benito Juárez borough, according to city authorities.
Ximena Guzmán, the mayor’s personal secretary, and José Muñoz, a government advisor, were fatally shot near the intersection of Calzada de Tlalpan and Napoleón Street in the Moderna neighborhood, close to the Xola Metro station. The attack occurred shortly before 8 a.m. Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene.
In a statement, the Mexico City government confirmed that the assailants were riding a motorcycle when they opened fire on the vehicle carrying Guzmán and Muñoz.
Mayor Brugada, who took office in October, expressed “deep sadness” over the killings and posted the government’s official statement on social media.
Authorities said the city’s Security Ministry and Attorney General’s Office, with federal support, have launched an investigation to determine the motive behind the attack. Surveillance footage from nearby video cameras is being reviewed in an effort to identify those responsible.
“There will be no impunity,” the statement read. “The perpetrators will be brought to justice. We extend our condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims and will provide all necessary support.”
President Claudia Sheinbaum echoed that sentiment during her morning press conference, reading the government’s statement and pledging full federal assistance to Mayor Brugada.
“We’re going to get to the bottom of this,” Sheinbaum said, adding that both victims had long been affiliated with the ruling Morena party. “Our solidarity and support go out to their families and to Clara.”
The high-profile killings recall a 2020 attack on Omar García Harfuch, then Mexico City’s security minister under Sheinbaum and now the federal security minister. García Harfuch was seriously injured in an ambush attributed to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel. Three others were killed in that incident.
The latest attack has renewed concerns about political violence and public safety in the capital.
