Dr. Jaime Álvarez Zayas, director of the Eighth Health Region, reported that an increase in coronavirus cases is expected in Puerto Vallarta for the winter season starting in November of this year due to the arrival of tourists, for which he urged residents to continue taking care of themselves with the measures they already know, especially hand washing.
The doctor commented that, at this time, there is an increase in coronavirus cases with the Omicron variant called Eris, especially in the United States, Europe, China, Israel, and Mexico.
The Eris variant has a very high transmissibility rate.
During the coming winter high season, there will surely be a significant increase in coronavirus cases.
Álvarez said, “Yes, a rebound is expected, of course, and we must follow the protective measures that we have already learned for many years of being with this virus, such as hand washing, an action that is most life-saving and protective. We have also learned that, in confined places, we must wear a mask, and if we are sick, not to go out, so as not to infect other people.”
He recalled that older adults are the most vulnerable, as well as minors and people living with diabetes and hypertension, which is a large part of Mexico’s population. Therefore, they must continue with these measures, and they must not let their guard down, since this virus has not disappeared.
“We are already seeing in the United States and other countries that hospitalizations and cases have increased by a lot, and there are people who have complications and continue to die from the coronavirus. So, we should not have a short memory and forget about this problem,” he warned.
Although in the coming months, COVID-19, dengue, and influenza could all come together, the doctor indicated that there will be a strategy to identify each of these diseases since they share similar symptoms. Therefore, people should not self-medicate. They should go to their doctor for an accurate diagnosis, since the treatment is different for the three diseases.
