Perhaps for many, the war in Ukraine is so far away from Mexico that it cannot have any effect here. However, Jalisco Governor Enrique Alfaro Ramírez said, on the contrary, that there is no doubt that there may be some negative effects economically.
He said, “Yes, it can have a significant impact on our economy, particularly on oil prices and the effects that it can have on the price of gasoline, which in itself is already under severe pressure due to the announcement a few days ago that the component of the IEPS had already reached zero.” That is, there are no longer any federal subsidies, and there is, therefore, no room to control costs to the consumer.
Therefore, he believes that the conflict in that part of the world is an issue that “affects the entire world from an economic point of view. Mexico, of course, is not exempt, but obviously, I am not going to give an opinion on the nature of that conflict. We are simply attentive to see what effects it can have, particularly in the economic dynamics” of the state, which is positive. Proof of this is the level of foreign direct investment achieved in recent months, he said.
The effects of situations that are beyond the reach of Mexico are evaluated on an ongoing basis, and such is the case with this conflict.
“These are issues that we are measuring because they have economic implications for Jalisco, and we will have to see what happens in the coming days.”
