On Monday, two Guadalajara police officers were shot by individuals trying to flee after committing a robbery. One of the officers was injured. The other one, Victoria Sánchez, lost her life hours later while receiving medical attention.

Between January 2018 and the death of Sánchez, 84 police officers and agents in charge of security (municipal, state, investigators, and the National Guard) have been murdered in Jalisco, according to the organization Common Cause.

Most of the attacks occurred within the Guadalajara Metropolitan Area. Of the total of the victims, 47 were killed or found dead in one of the nine municipalities that comprise it. The rest were registered elsewhere within the state.

The municipality that recorded the most murders in the last three years is Zapopan, with 14 officers. Then there is Guadalajara, with 12. In third place was Tonalá, with 11 fallen officers.

For Common Cause investigator Raúl Rosales, the fact that the metropolis concentrates more victims is due to the crime incidence, which is much higher in the city.

“Police officers are at greater risk of being killed in these specific areas, given the violent dynamics that exist in them,” he said, adding that, to prevent the statistics from growing, it is necessary to increase training, and provide them with sufficient resources to carry out their work.

Officer Victoria Sánchez, who was 33 years old, was buried yesterday morning, accompanied by her relatives and colleagues from the Gamas Group of the Guadalajara Police, where she had worked since October 1, 2012.
